10 Things to Know About CBD Oil
While it’s legal to use medical marijuana in 29 states, for some there is still a bit confusion as to whether or not CBD oil is legal. Even though CBD oil is derived from both cannabis families (hemp vs medical cannabis), CBD dominant hemp extracts are more favorable legal territory than medical marijuana plants, or anything THC dominant.
Medical marijuana research seems to find a new application for the plant and its derivatives almost every day. Yet, there are still many hurdles to overcome in regards to large scale research.
In some states, medical cannabis’ nebulous legal status makes it hard for specialists to obtain the funding needed to study it. Funding is often lacking because even when the plant’s natural compounds are found to be quite useful, the program might not be viable until it’s federally legalized. At the time of this writing, Sen. Mitch McConnell is talking about introducing the Hemp Farming Act with Sen. Rand Paul to legalize hemp on the federal level.
Hemp derived CBD oil differs in a number of ways from the plant it’s from, and even other extracts. Here are 10 things you should know about it:
1. CBD Is the Main Cannabinoid
There are over 60 compounds within cannabis that are most focused on. They’re generally considered under the umbrella term of “cannabinoids”.
Cannabidiol is the full name of the ‘CBD’ in CBD oil. THC and CBD are the two most commonly sought extracted compounds of the plant to date.
The reason they are the two most used extracts is that there have been many benefits discovered, with each having their own unique profile. These are the two extracts that are most widely studied, and which have yielded the most interesting results.
It could be years before we have a full view of what they can do, but, for now, these two have many secrets to reveal, and we look forward to bringing those understandings to you as they develop.
2. It Doesn’t Get You High
While you might think any element of cannabis is linked to feeling high, CBD oil on its own won’t do that trick.
When CBD is the dominant cannabinoid over THC and the many other enzymes in the plant, it has little effect in that department, called psychoactivity. Delta-9 THC is the chemical that binds to certain receptors to give the feeling of being high.
That’s one of the reasons why CBD is so safe. You can get all of the benefits from taking the oil without the potential impairing qualities.
3. Hemp CBD Oil Is Considered Legal
CBD can be derived from different sources. You can get it from either medical cannabis, or from hemp plants. Even hops and certain types of tree bark contain CBD. Industrial hemp, in it’s many forms, has been imported into the US legally for years, and even wars have been fought over access to the valuable plant fibers.
When you buy CBD oil derived from hemp, it can be from a legally imported crop or extract, as well as can be grown and sold from several states within the US. We feature products from Europe, Colorado, Kentucky, Michigan, California, and more are sure to come.
4. Cannabinoid Levels Can Vary by Product
Every plant strain, referred to as the genetics, produces varying quantities of cannabinoids, determining how much CBD, CBG, CBC, or THC the plant can produce, and ultimately in the end products once an extract is made.
The plants that are used for recreational purposes will have higher THC concentrations, generally, and reduced amounts of CBD. Inversely, when you test industrial hemp plants for THC, you get lower levels, less than 0.3% THC after harvest by legal standards.
Specially bred hemp plants can produce higher CBD than many of the other varieties of hemp, like those grown for seed or for fiber.
This means that when you find a facility growing plants for medical hemp purposes, they won’t be able to get anyone high. Their main purpose is to produce lots of CBD for testing and medicinal purposes.
5. You Can Get CBD Oil without a Prescription
Whether because not enough testing has been done or because there hasn’t been a crackdown yet, CBD cannot yet be prescribed by a physician. They can recommend it in states that have legalized some form of medical cannabis. This has to do with the regulations set forth by many different ‘alphabet soup’ organizations.
However, if you’re ordering CBD products that are derived from the hemp plants, like the products on our site, you face a different story. These hemp CBD products do not require a prescription nor a recommendation. They are hemp derived food products and supplements.
6. It’s Definitely Medicinal
There are now studies showing that there are some definitely therapeutic and medicinal benefits to CBD.
If you’re suffering from a condition or taking meds that induce nausea or vomiting, CBD might be able to help. It also works as an antioxidant that can reduce the risk of developing neurogenerative disorders, according to US Patent 6630507.
7. It’s Good for the Brain
There are many studies now working to find out the exact benefits of antipsychotic treatments.
As noted in the ‘507 patent, the antioxidative nature of cannabinoids like CBD can demonstrate. The first paragraph from the patent is:
Cannabinoids have been found to have antioxidant properties, unrelated to NMDA receptor antagonism. This new found property makes cannabinoids useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of wide variety of oxidation associated diseases, such as ischemic, age-related, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and HIV dementia. Nonpsychoactive cannabinoids, such as cannabidiol, are particularly advantageous to use because they avoid toxicity that is encountered with psychoactive cannabinoids at high doses useful in the method of the present invention. A particular disclosed class of cannabinoids useful as neuroprotective antioxidants is formula (I) wherein the R group is independently selected from the group consisting of H, CH3, and COCH3.
8. Does It Fight Cancer?
Much more research is needed to make this determination. Certain cells don’t spread in the presence of CBD.
Through peer-reviewed research, we’ll hopefully see more conclusive results beyond the promising ones we’ve already got.
9. It Balances ‘The High’
In patients who’ve reacted negatively to THC, CBD can balance out those effects. This will help in creating both more ideal recreational products as well as better medicinal formulas.
CBD can ease paranoia and the negative effects that people experience with THC. If you take CBD oil after taking the wrong amount of THC, you can return to a relative state of balance easily.
10. It Can Help with Seizures
There are now several university studies that are looking at the impact that CBD oil can have on kids with seizures. In fact, the GW Pharmaceuticals has reached regulatory approval in over 25 countries for Sativex to be used in the treatment of spasticity due to MS.
There have been many positive results showing that the risks of suffering uncontrolled seizures for kids with this issue have plummeted in some instances. Over the next few years, we should see even more scientific results.
